There has been a lot of buzz on the web lately, especially because of the messaging app WhatsApp.
Shocking messages about how WhatsApp works have been published on social media. People were tracking the messaging app’s activity from the private dashboard app, which led to the discovery of strange activity.
Based on the findings, WhatsApp will activate the microphone on its own schedule. WhatsApp commented on the matter on its Twitter account and accused the private dashboard of drawing wrong conclusions.
According to Meta-owned WhatsApp, the problem lies with Android, whose bug causes it to mis-detect microphone activation. WhatsApp asked Google to investigate.
Elon Musk also took a stand on the matter. He tweeted that “WhatsApp cannot be trusted”.
Google and WhatsApp have since investigated the issue and identified an underlying bug that affects some Android devices. That’s why there has been no eavesdropping with this information. Below is the WhatsApp tweet.
Over the past 24 hours we have been in contact with a Twitter engineer who posted an issue with his Pixel phone and WhatsApp.
We believe this is a bug on Android that misrepresents information in its Privacy Dashboard and have asked Google to investigate and fix it. https://t.co/MnBi3qE6Gp
