A YouTuber named Trevor Daniel Jacobs could face up to 20 years in prison for intentionally causing a plane crash.
A year ago, Trevor Daniel Jacobs published a video in which the plane he was piloting alone appeared to lose engine power mid-flight. Jacob escapes the plane by jumping with a parachute, and records the entire series of events on video from several different angles and with his handheld selfie stick. The video can still be viewed on YouTube and has been viewed nearly 2.9 million times.
The plane crash had already raised a lot of questions at the time of publication and there were suspicions that the stunt was intentional. Jacob did not even try to restore engine power, but decided to leave the plane too early. Jacob had a parachute on his back for skydiving, not the usual parachute for pilots. Also, it was strange that there were so many cameras on the plane and they were pointing in exactly the right direction to film the crash.
Forbes says Jacobs has now admitted the act was intentional, and could face up to 20 years in prison. As an aggravating factor, Jacob lied to accident investigators several times during the investigation, claiming for example that he did not know where the plane had crashed. In the end, no one was hurt by the situation.
