Russia invades Ukraine’s Eurovision representative’s hometown during band’s final performance

On Saturday night, Russia invaded the hometown of Ukrainian Eurovision singer Torch at the same time as the band performed at the Eurovision final in Liverpool. The band tells about it on Instagram.

The British broadcasting company BBC says Tvorch had also published a previous update on Instagram about the attacks on Ternopil ten minutes before taking the stage.

Ukrainian news website Kiev Independent wrote at around 5 a.m. that explosions were heard again in Ternopil. The matter was brought to light by the region’s governor, Volodymyr Trush, who urged residents to stay in shelters.

Earlier in the night, Trush also commented on the attacks during the Eurovision Song Contest, which she said left two people injured. According to the BBC, the city was targeted by missiles.

According to Serhiy Nadal, the mayor of Ternopil, warehouse buildings were damaged in the previous attack, the BBC reports.

An overnight air alert has been issued for the entire country in Ukraine, reports the Kiev Independent.

Air alert was activated in many areas at around 3 in the morning, after which air alert was declared across the country before 4 o’clock.

Andrey Germak, the chief of staff of the President of Ukraine, asked citizens not to ignore the air alert. At around 5 am, he updated the Air Defense about the work being done.

According to the Kyiv Independent, local Telegram channels have reported explosions during the night, at least in the regions of Kherson and Sumy.

At about five in the morning, the air alert was still active in all regions of Ukraine.

Important steps are being taken rapidly in Ukraine’s counterattack, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said in an interview with Italian media, according to Corriere della Sera.

He was asked on the Porta a Porta talk show about the timing and goals of the counterattack. However, the Ukrainian leader did not comment on the plans or programs in more detail. He insisted that this would not help Ukraine.

However, Zelensky underlined that Ukraine is preparing very well. He predicted that the results would come and said that Ukraine is confident of victory.

Zelensky visited Rome on Saturday. During his visit to Italy, he met with Pope Francis and Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, among others.

The President of Ukraine continued his European tour to Germany over the weekend. This is Zelensky’s first visit to Germany since Russia’s major invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

Zelensky said on Twitter Finnish time on Sunday, arrived in Berlin early in the evening.

In Germany, Zelensky met with the country’s President Frank-Walter Steinmeier in the morning. The contents of the discussions between the civil servants are not disclosed to the public. According to media reports, Zelensky will also meet German Chancellor Olaf Scholz later today.
