Recycling and sustainable development are becoming today’s trends in the activities of both consumers and companies. Data from phone recycling company Swappie shows that phones are increasingly being sold in physical stores. The company is opening new offices.
Swapy said in its announcement that more and more people are delivering their used phones to stores for resale instead of mailing them. In the future, smartphones sold on Swapy may be dropped off at Telia stores in six shopping centers in Finland. The stores are located in Launae in Lahti, Hansacourteli in Turku, Apeli in Kuopio, Revontuli in Rovaniemi, Sokkeri in Jyväskylä and Valka in Oulu.
“Currently, only a fifth of used phones are recycled or sold in Finland. With the help of collection points, it has become much easier to put phones into circulation. Extending the life cycle of devices is vital to our climate and the circular economy. is an important part of the work,” says Juha-Matti Kikkanen, circular economy expert at Telia.
Although online shopping is popular, phones sold by retailers must primarily be carried at physical stores. Of the devices sold to the company, 45 percent are brought to the collection point and 55 percent are shipped to the destination. A year earlier in May 2022, the corresponding figures were 29 percent at a collection point and 71 percent by mail.
