Amazon has revealed that it is developing a new The Lord of the Rings massively multiplayer game.
Amazon Games and Middle-earth Enterprises, owned by Swedish company Embracer Group, have revealed that they have signed an agreement to develop a new game. Only a small amount of advance information was revealed about the game, published by Amazon Games, but there will be familiar stories from the world of literature adapted to the game format.
According to the release, the new The Lord of the Rings project is an open world massively multiplayer adventure set in Middle-earth. The game is said to use JRR Tolkien’s books as its source material, such as The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings trilogies.
The game is said to be in the early stages of development. Amazon Games Orange County, best known as the developer of the massively multiplayer game Amazon’s New World, took over the development of the game. A new game is said to be in the works for PC and consoles.
This isn’t the first time that Amazon has tried to turn The Lord of the Rings into a massively multiplayer game. The company worked on an online game in collaboration with Chinese Tencent a few years ago, but disagreements between the companies left the development unfinished.
