At least six people have died in a fire at a hostel in New Zealand, Prime Minister Chris Hipkins said. They estimate that there are possibly as many as six dead.
– As I understand it, six were confirmed earlier, but it appears there are probably more, Hipkins commented on the number of dead.
According to a police representative, the final death toll is expected to be less than ten, but more detailed information about the dead will be available once the building is entered.
According to the Prime Minister, a fire broke out in a hostel located in the country’s capital Wellington in the early hours of Tuesday local time.
Nick Pyatt, a representative of the Rescue Authority, described fires of this class as occurring only once a decade in Wellington.
– This is our worst nightmare, he said.
According to local rescue officials, 52 people were rescued from the hostel, some of whom were pulled out through the roof.
