Overwatch 2’s biggest change has been canceled.
Developer Blizzard Entertainment says it has canceled the release of Overwatch 2’s Hero Missions. According to the studio, the development of the game mode, which is based on confrontation between players and AI enemies, has not progressed as expected, which is why it was not able to realize the vision set for the game mode.
Blizzard introduced Overwatch 2 in 2019. At the time, it was the cooperative hero missions that played a key role in the game’s announcement. The game mode included a long-term progression mechanism and its own ability tree. However, Overwatch 2 was released last year without that game format, as a fairly minor updated competitive shooter.
However, the studio says it will continue to develop Overwatch 2’s story missions. Stand-alone story missions are said to continue to offer cooperative action against AI enemies. As per the current plan, the first story mission will be released in Season 6, which is scheduled to start in August.
