Jedi: Survivor 2019 is the sequel to the game Jedi: Fallen Order. It starred Jedi warrior Cal Kestis, a young survivor of the Empire’s Jedi purge who goes back to freedom and the fight against evil.
The original Star Wars film trilogy followed a pattern where the middle part, The Empire Strikes Back, is more serious and adult. It has since become part of the standard format of the Hollywood spectacle trilogy. Empire Strikes Back reminds me of Jedi: Survivor just by the name of the game. Now that Cal Kestis has been introduced as a rookie in the first game, we can get to know him again as a more bearded and seasoned freedom fighter.
More subtly, this means that the game’s main character is no longer as cumbersome as it is in Fallen Order. Maybe beard brings charisma.
Fallen Order was a good game, but the sequel is better in almost every area. The combat, the farm design, the transportation of the story… everything feels smoother than ever. The exception to this is the game’s map, which is still quite tricky. It faithfully follows the hologram style characteristic of Star Wars, but when you use it, you can mostly see which direction you should go.
While playing, the time is structured around battles and finding the right path. There are several fighting styles: a laser sword, two swords, a double-edged sword. Jedi powers are helpful too and hurling enemies off a cliff never ceases to be fun.
Climbing and traversing a route feels less like Star Wars while playing. It takes time to cover even short distances while climbing walls and hanging from ceilings. It reminds me of the Uncharted and Tomb Raider games, where you also hang off the walls of buildings.
challenges Stava. Large and rugged landscape full of dangers and secrets.
The familiar side characters from the first game return and Cal doesn’t have to adventure alone. The different planets are each vast entities with many secrets hidden in them. You may only be able to access them when you return to visit them at a new time, armed with the necessary abilities and attributes.
While playing, FromSoftware’s Dark Souls and its many derivatives easily come to mind. The combat has the same ruthlessness and save points require you to march back to the start of boss fights. The theme of the whole country, like Star Wars, can be seen in the fact that the difficulty level of the game can be adjusted quite precisely to your liking.
I am a victorious Jedi hero! A lightsaber swings and Imperial stormtroopers strike left and right. First, though, you’ll need to spend a quarter-foot on tar to get one of the rakes working again. ,
There have been several reports of technical problems hindering gameplay on some platforms, particularly PC. However, I haven’t been able to do this myself while playing on PS5, so either they’ve already been patched or I’ve just been lucky.
Jedi: Survivor is a good, even excellent Star Wars game. This is no small feat, as there have been good games set in the Star Wars world before, such as the Knights of the Old Republic RPG and the first (but not the second) Force Unleashed. It’s fun to see that the Jedi still have quite a kick.
