Australian authorities confirmed Friday that officers had used a remote Taser on a 95-year-old woman who approached officers slowly with a walker and a butcher knife. After the incident, the woman was taken to the hospital, where her condition remains critical.

Officers were called to the Yallambi Lodge Nursing Home in New South Wales on Wednesday. For several minutes, police and paramedics tried to wrestle the knife from the woman, but eventually she began moving toward the group, at which point one of the police officers used his remote control.

Peter Cotter, representing the state police, said, “Frankly when the remote landing was being used it was moving very slowly.”

As soon as she fell, the woman got badly hurt on her head. According to local media, the woman was a great-grandmother and was suffering from dementia.

An inquiry has been launched into the actions of the police officer who used the remote control. The incidents were recorded on police composite cameras, but the tapes have yet to be released.
