In the documentary Love to Love You, Donna Summer’s daughter Brooklyn Sudano talks about the years of her mother’s massive popularity. The singer’s over-the-top sexuality was part of the performance.

Donna Summer, who made the huge disco hits I Feel Love and Love to Love You Baby in Germany in the mid-1970s with Italian Giorgio Moroder, was perhaps a more talented singer than she was then. Later, her voice was compared to that of Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey.

The song’s caressing words, rhythmic melody and Summer’s extroverted sexiness were all part of her performance, which carried over to the performance several times.

– I approached singing as an actor, not as a singer. It’s really acting. I try not to be myself, said Samar.

The documentary, which premiered at the Berlin Film Festival in February, traces the life and career of Summer (1948–2012), born Ladonna Adrianne Gaines, taking her from German avant-garde circles to New York’s famous had taken to dance clubs and worldwide popularity. The documentary, directed by Roger Ross Williams and Summer’s daughter Brooklyn Sudano, tells Sing’s story through previously unreleased home video.

The audience went absolutely insane. People tearing off her bras and underwear and throwing them on stage, the documentary describes Summer’s gig experiences at the height of her popularity.

One of Summer’s big milestones was being the first black female singer to have a music video for the popular music channel MTV, which had a profound impact on popular culture. However, it was not easy to reconcile huge popularity, career and motherhood.

Summer also cuts out the words about herself from the papers as she does not want her children to see them.
