Serbia has begun withdrawing its troops from the border with Kosovo, said US National Security Council representative John Kirby.

The United States previously said Serbia had significantly increased its troops along the border. The United States demanded that Serbia withdraw its forces so as not to increase instability in the region.

On the other hand, Serbian authorities said on Tuesday that they had arrested the leader of a group suspected of killing a Kosovar policeman. He is also suspected of smuggling weapons and explosives.

A policeman was killed in an ambush that followed a siege battle between an armed group and Kosovo police in a Kosovar village near the Serbian border. Three Serbian gunmen were killed in the hours-long siege.

Kosovo blames Serbia for the series of incidents, which in turn holds Kosovo responsible.

Serbia has not recognized the independence of Kosovo. Kosovo declared independence from Serbia in 2008.
